Hibiscus is a bright colorful flower rich in several plant-based compounds such as antioxidants, malic acid, vitamins, and minerals. They are known to have several healing properties when applied topically.
What Makes Hibiscus Good for Your Skin
It contains gentle acids that have skin-firming properties and can potentially give you an even skin tone and clear complexion. It also contains antioxidants that get rid of harmful free radicals, that effectively remove impurities from your skin. This powder has several benefits and might just become your favorite skincare item.
Anti-aging
Hibiscus is termed as an anti-ageing plant that improves the elasticity of your skin giving you a more youthful look. It does this by restricting the activity of the enzyme elastase which breaks down the elastin in our skin. The plant actively works to firm and lift your skin to slow down the process of aging.
Exfoliating
Hibiscus contains a few acids that help in evening out your skin tone as they naturally exfoliate the skin. AHA’s are well-established for the benefits they provide to your skin which are present in hibiscus. The malic and citric acid it contains gets rid of dead skin cells while encouraging cell turnover for clear skin and reduced hyperpigmentation.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants combat free radicals that damage the skin. These may come from UV radiations and other pollutants that your skin might come into contact with, making you susceptible to premature aging. The antioxidants found in hibiscus are known as anthocyanins which provide protection against free radical damage. It also reduces the appearance of pores as it has slightly astringent properties giving you a smoother complexion. For people with sensitive skin, it may even have an anti-inflammatory impact that helps soothe inflamed skin.
Natural Hydrator
Mucilage is a naturally occurring sticky substance found in plants which is a great moisturizing source for your skin, that keeps it feeling soft and hydrated. The high mucilage content found in hibiscus has the ability to retain moisture which leaves your skin feeling supple, giving you a more youthful appearance.
Supports the Natural Production of Collagen
Hibiscus helps with the natural collagen production in your body. Vitamin C in hibiscus is necessary for the natural production of collagen through gene expression. A few enzymes are dependent on vitamin C, for it to properly stabilize and crosslink collagen molecules.
How to use
Hydrating Mask
Mix a tablespoon each of hibiscus powder, apple cider vinegar, and honey. Apply to your skin and rinse it off after 10 mins.
Mask for Exfoliation
Put half a tablespoon of hibiscus powder, oats, and raw honey into a bowl. Add some water until you reach your desired consistency but make sure to not make the mixture too runny. Leave it on your skin for 10 minutes and use wet hands to gently massage your face but do not do this if you have active breakouts or inflamed skin. Rinse it off and repeat the next week.
