Origin

Chia Seeds come from a flowering plant from the mint family, scientifically known as Salvia hispanica. The origins of this food date back to 3500 BC grown in Mexico. It was used as an energy source for the Aztec warriors and Mesoamerican Indians as it has a high fiber concentration and omega-3 fatty acids. It was ground in flour, used in drinks, or mixed with food. It was also extracted for the oil. After a while, its cultivation was banned and people seem to forget about it until the late ’90s.
